It is unbelievable that this Mary Magdalene didn’t recognize Jesus. After everything Jesus did for her? First she didn’t recognize him and than she though that he is the gardener. Together they experienced a lot. She walked and ate with him. Jesus even casted out seven demons of Mary Magdalene. Someone like this you really should remember, don’t you? Many Christians today believe it to be shameful that Mary Magdalene didn’t recognize her Lord. Her she is, sitting in front of Only when Jesus addressed her with her name her eyes are opened and she saw her Lord alive and well. Mary was so happy that she didn’t want to let go of Jesus. He probably had to raise his voice a little to get her off. Perhaps Mary felt a little guilty because she just didn’t realize at first who he was. However, Mary ran full of joy to the other disciples to tell them: “I have seen the Lord!” We can criticize Mary a lot for many things but who else can say that they have seen the Lord? Mary was even the first human to see him after his resurrection. We all can share about moments that we experienced Jesus but only a few can say that they have seen him. After his crucifixion was she the first one to see him alive – but only after she discovered the empty tomb. Mary didn’t see Jesus right away because her perception was influenced and limited by her expectation. When we do not expect Jesus to be alive we probably will experience him that way. But if we want to experience and see the living Jesus we need to believe in the resurrection. Of course you believe in the resurrection! We all do and that makes us so happy. Jesus certainly said at the cross that it is finished but he wasn’t done yet. The resurrection is the moment that Jesus was victorious over death – or better said – our death. The question I want to ask all of us is: How would your life look like without the resurrection? Do you find it difficult to form an answer? If you can’t identify a difference in your life you can ask Jesus to show you the empty tomb. Because Jesus is standing right behind you all the time, calling you by name. Jesus is not the gardener who plants cute flowers to make your Christian life a little bit more bearable. Jesus moves stones out of the way!

an empty tomb, whining in front of angels. And when Jesus approaches her, which is for Mary only the local flower expert, she asks where they took him.
