Awakening at youth camp – What’s next?

What a great youth camp this has been! God was moving in a powerful way. In the earlier post ‘Awakening at youth camp’ you could read all about what was going on during the talent night that is organized every year on the camp. This was a very unique experience and as leadership team we are still amazed about what happened on that Wednesday night. The days after the talent night we experienced an amazing shift in the overall atmosphere of the group. Throughout the remainder of the camp we dealt with a different group and we had to change our plans for the services to come. But those were changes we gladly made!

Another climax of the week was the Friday night service. The sermon was all about complete surrender. It was imperative that the group understood that what happened on Wednesday night was not likely to happen again. On Wednesday night we made one step and after that it was important to move on and build on what God changed in their lives. I like to believe that God wouldn’t want us to seek constant repeating of that experience, but he would rather love to see us move on now and look for what there is to see with the new sight we gained. God opened the eyes and hearts of many people on Wednesday night. Therefore many responded to the call of completely giving their lives to God during the Friday night service.

During the service we again had a time of sharing and testimony. The main question this time was if people could tell how they experienced the camp and what God did in their lives during camp. This time different people got up and shared about the love they felt, that they feel compelled to deepen their relationship with Jesus, that they took off a holy mask, and that they learned more about themselves by getting to know God better. Many of them experienced something totally new. And so did we! The group was so close as never seen before.

In the end of the service we asked them to give God’s blessing to each other. The group experienced a great sense of fellowship and openness. It was only appropriate to not limit the giving of the blessing to only one person. For almost half an hour the young people went to one after another giving a blessing, hugging, crying with each other, laughing with each other, praying with each other, and saying goodbye.

Until early in the morning of Saturday the young people spend time writing in notebooks. Every year in the end of the week little notebooks are handed out with the names of the participants and leaders on it. The idea is to write a little letter in someone else’s notebook. The group leaders write in the notebooks of their group members, group member to group member, friend to friend, and so on. But this year it was obvious that much more time was spent writing to each other.

God did truly great things on this years youth camp. He certainly awakened something in the young people. Something we can’t really grasp yet. The big question for us as leaders is: What’s next? It is certainly a question asked with amazement, wondering what God will do next. But it is also a question of concern, seeking ways to help the young people living the awakened Christian live. I really want to ask you to pray for those young people. Pray for their leaders and pastors. Pray that what God has done in their lives doesn’t stay an experience in itself but that it truly will be a new and awakened beginning in their Christian journey. I am really curious what will be next!
