The weekend from the 16th to the 18th of October the Zaanstad youth went on their annual weekend camp. This year’s theme was inspired by a Dutch TV game show called “Who is the mole?” The purpose of the game is to accomplish certain tasks and at the same time try to find the mole in your group, who is trying to sabotage your efforts. All weekend we played several games. The group was divided into seven groups that played against each other. Each group had one mole, which made the weekend one great hunt for the saboteur. Since everybody was assuming that everybody could be the mole the tension was high and every weird action was immediately marked as mole behavior. Playing these games all weekend was a lot of fun. But you can also easily make the connection to church life. Always busy finding and blaming the one that is guilty, disturbing the happy church family life.
Saturday night was especially good because we had a great service together. What made it so special was that at some point some people started to sing some Christian children songs and suddenly the whole group was drawn into it. We sang one children song after another and it was just great! To be honest – I never before saw a group worshipping with such passion and joy as they did at that moment. They were clapping, jumping, and dancing and shouting one song after another. I once participated in a church service in Amman, Jordan and I like to believe that we came pretty close to the Middle Eastern freedom in worship.
During the service we also spoke about the betrayal of Peter. Earlier that day the whole group participated in Bible studies on the betrayal of Judas. In the evening we compared the two and talked about the difference. One conclusion was that Peter took the second chance that Jesus offered him. Judas didn’t allow himself to do the same. The confession of Peter, him taking off of his mask, was the foundation of the church. We closed the evening with a time of sharing with each other. All over the place little groups of three or four shared about difficulties in their lives, in their homes, at school, masks that they wear, and their need for a second chance, concluding the evening with praying for each other and helping each other in being an honest and authentic follower of Jesus.
I personally believe that the youth group of Zaanstad is on a very good track and I am so excited to see what God will do. They have a very difficult time behind them and struggled with a lot of issues as a group. But now Gods faithfulness came through and the groups is starting to live up to their calling – LIVE. GIVE. LOVE.
